Men's Soccer Beaten 2-1 By Stetson In A-Sun Finale

Nov. 4, 2004

Box Score

DeLand, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team fell 2-1 at Stetson on Thursday afternoon in a critical game for both teams. The loss, combined with UCF's 1-0 win at Jacksonville, means the Owls (11-3, 7-2) will share the regular season title with the Golden Knights (8-5-2, 7-2) and will be the #2 seed for the Atlantic Sun Tournament after losing the head-to-head battle with UCF earlier this season. Stetson clinches the sixth and final seed in the tournament with the win and could play FAU in the semifinals if the Hatters win their first round game.

The Owls opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a Bjorn Totland free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Totland, the player fouled on the play, has now scored seven goals in his last six games.

In the 30th minute, the Hatters were even as Mauricio Ruiz scored his third goal of the season, finishing off a rebound from an Anders Granstad save.

FAU were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute when junior defender Andreas Heggelund was sent off for his second bookable offense in as many minutes.

With less than five minutes remaining, Alex Minton scored on an assist by Jason Osborne sending Stetson into next week's tournament and the Owls down into the second seed position.

The Hatters will take on Mercer at 7 p.m. in Thursday's first round with the winner of that game to take on the Owls in Friday's semifinals, also at 7 p.m. FAU will conclude regular season play on Sunday evening when they host Adelphi at 7:30 p.m.
