FAU Wins ASC Regular Season Title in 1-0 Win over Howard

Nov. 2, 2007

Box Score

BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team became conference champions for the first time in school history, clinching the Atlantic Soccer Conference regular season title with a dramatic 1-0 win over Howard University at FAU Field on Friday night.

FAU (7-7-2, 4-0-1 ASC) withstood a strong physical challenge by a highly-motivated Bison squad, breaking through with the game-winning goal in the 87th minute on a spectacular scoring strike by Javier Carillo.

The junior midfielder picked the most opportune time to score his first goal of the season, making an inside move to his left and getting just enough space to bury a shot past Howard goalkeeper Victor Thomas for the unassisted tally.

Reigning ASC Goalkeeper of the Week Phillip Lamarre was brilliant once again. The sophomore made a series of tremendous saves during an important second-half stretch as Howard was applying intense pressure, keeping the game within reach for FAU.

The Bison (3-6-5) forced the action throughout, earning an overwhelming 13-1 advantage on corner kicks. The team's best scoring chance came in the 51st minute as a Matt Marshall header hit squarely off the crossbar. Howard outshot FAU 10-8 for the game.

Florida Atlantic now prepares for the ASC Tournament with two home games against in-state rivals to close the season. First up is Florida International (2-11-2, 2-5-0 C-USA) in a Sunday match-up, beginning at 2 p.m. at FAU Field.

Sunday is Fan Appreciation Day, with half-price admission for adults wearing FAU gear, and free admission for children with FAU apparel or signs supporting the team. Water bottles and Owls towels will also be given away to fans in attendance.
