Men's Soccer Ends Regular Season With a Victory

Oct. 30, 2000

ORLANDO, FL

Despite being outshot 20-8 and playing the final 56 minutes of the match a man-down, Florida Atlantic University still managed to defeat Centenary College 3-1 Sunday in the final round of the University of Central Florida Tournament in Orlando. Helgi Jonsson scored his first two career goals while Christian Wik also added his first career goal in the Owls victory. The match was FAU's last of the regular season as the Owls finished with a 9-6-1 record.

Jonsson gave FAU a 1-0 lead 9:10 into the match when he connected off an assist from Wik. Leading 1-0 with 16 minutes left in the first half, FAU lost Federico Santana to his second caution in as many minutes which gave the Gents a man-advantage.

Centenary was unable to capitalize as Wik scored with 1:50 left in the first half to give FAU a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission.

The Owls scored their final goal with 28:07 left in the match when Jonsson connected on an unassisted goal. Centenary's Jason Fowler scored less than a minute later to account for the Gents' only goal.

Jonas Kolstad played 79 minutes in goal for FAU, allowing just one goal and recording nine saves.

FAU next will face Stetson University Thursday afternoon at 4:00pm in the first round of the Trans America Athletic Conference Championship in Buies Creek, NC.
