FAU Battles #7 Virginia Tough in 4-2 Defeat
Oct. 16, 2007
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team fared well in its toughest test of the season Tuesday night, falling to seventh-ranked University of Virginia in a 4-2 final. The Owls held their own against a formidable Cavaliers offensive attack before UVA broke through with two goals in a five-minute span, staking out to a 2-0 first half advantage. Jonathan Villanueva scored his first goal of the season on a free kick for Virginia in the game's 25th minute. The sophomore midfielder then assisted on teammate Jason Kim's first score of the 2007 campaign on a redirected corner kick in the 30th minute. FAU played dead even against UVA in the second half, generating offense early on a thunderous 30-yard strike by Franz Chevannes just over 10 minutes into the frame. It was the second goal of the season for the senior defender, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Cavaliers then put the game away with back-to-back markers by senior forward Matt Ayotte, his second and third scores on the year. Liam Ogle added his third goal of 2007 for the Owls on a free kick from 19 yards out for the final margin. Virginia (8-2-2, 1-1-2 ACC) entered the contest ranked no. 7 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Florida Atlantic (5-7-1, 2-0-0 ASC) returns home for a conference match-up with Philadelphia on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live updates available via GameTracker on fausports.com.
