Totland's Late Goal Gives Men's Soccer 1-0 Win

Oct. 10, 2004

Box Score

BOCA RATON, FL - Bjorn Totland's goal with five seconds left in regulation gave the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Oneonta State on Sunday afternoon.

Josh Garbee's long corner from the left was met on the volley by Totland whose shot went through a crowd of players before hitting the back of the Oneonta net. It was the Norwegian senior's third goal of the season and first game-winner.

The Owls (5-2, 1-1) dominated possession for the majority of the game but produced few quality chances, especially in the first half.

Oneonta almost opened the scoring midway through the first half when Chris Spence's rocket of a free kick was parried by FAU goalkeeper Anders Granstad with the resulting scramble sending the ball wide.

The second half saw the entrance of regular starters Totland, Kristoffer Aarskog, and Gustavo Alencar, who all spent the first 45 minutes on the bench.

Aarskog's height and skill caused trouble for the Red Dragons (4-8, 0-1) almost immediately and the senior nearly scored in the 54th minute when his 25-yard free kick clattered against the right-hand post of goalkeeper Timothy Melia.

Melia's fine positioning saved his team in the 60th minute when a point-blank header from Totland landed straight in the freshman goalkeeper's arms.

Things looked to be heading for overtime as neither team had any real chances in the final half hour, but Totland's last-minute effort denied the fans a chance for some free soccer.

NOTES: Freshman David Acosta saw his first action of the season, coming in on the left wing...freshman Diego Monsalve missed his second consecutive game with an ankle injury...sophomore Ryan Kinsley was also scratched after picking up an injury in Friday's 1-0 loss to Central Florida.
