FAU stays unbeaten in A-Sun play with 2-0 win over Georgia State

Oct. 4, 2001

Boca Raton - ,FL Florida Atlantic Men's soccer team improves to 2-0 in Atlantic-Sun Conference play with a 2-0 win over Georgia State University.

The two teams played through a scoreless first half in which FAU had 4 shots on net while Georgia State had 6.

FAU opened the scoring early in the second half (46:24), when Junior forward Frans Roenning was taken down in the box and FAU was awarded a penalty shot. Sophomore Bjorn Masson converted the penalty shot for his first goal of the season. FAU added an insurance goal at the 53:26 mark by Junior Emiliano Aranes. Freshman Josh Garbee played a ball into Aranes who beat a defender inside the penalty box and then beat Georgia State goalkeeper JB Wood for the 2-0 lead. The goal was Aranes team leading fourth of the season.

FAU played a solid defensive game and Senior goalkeeper Jonas Kolstad was again solid in goal making 8 saves for his first shutout on the season.

"We fought hard and earned the victory," stated FAU Head Coach Kos Donev. "We have to learn to play with a lead. We put ourselves under much more pressure when it was 2-0 compared to when it was 0-0. But that will come."

With the victory FAU moves to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the A-Sun Conference. Georgia State falls to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

FAU will be home again Sunday, October 7, at 7:30pm when they host Mercer University in another important Atlantic-Sun Conference game.
