FAU Edged 2-1 by Marshall in Home Return

Sept. 30, 2007

Box Score

BOCA RATON, FL - A wild and windy afternoon ended with a disappointing result for Florida Atlantic University's men's soccer team, as the Owls were stunned by an undermanned Marshall University squad in a 2-1 overtime final.

Marshall (7-3-0) lost its first player of the match when a red card was issued to junior midfielder Jira Cooley in the 37th minute. The two teams would finish the first half scoreless, with FAU outshooting MU by a 5-3 margin.

In the first minute of the second frame, senior captain Diego Monsalve quickly drew first blood for FAU. A penalty kick was awarded after a second red card was assessed to Marshall, as junior midfielder Dana Heimbecker was whistled for intentionally deflecting away a shot with his hand. The goal was the first of the season for Monsalve, and fourth of his collegiate career.

FAU missed out on three glorious opportunities to seal the game in regulation, with the offense unable to capitalize on open looks in the clear on Thundering Herd goalkeeper Craig Ratanamorn. The junior outdueled the Owls' Phillip Lamarre with eight total saves, as Florida Atlantic launched ten second-half shots en route to a 15-7 final tally.

Playing three men down after yet another red card at the end of regulation, Marshall struck quickly against the odds in overtime. Senior John Daniele nudged a soft header past Lamarre and the FAU defense just 1:19 into the extra session for his second goal of the day.

Florida Atlantic (4-5-0) next faces Florida Gulf Coast University this Thursday at 7 p.m. in the second of a three-game home stand. Real-time updates are available online by logging onto GameTracker at fausports.com.
