Men's Soccer Knocks Off #25 Florida International 2-0

Sept. 22, 2004

Box Score

Miami, FL - Goals from Josh Garbee and Bjorn Totland gave the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team a 2-0 upset victory over #25 Florida International University in Miami on Wednesday night.

The win is only the third time that the Owls (3-1) have beaten the Golden Panthers (2-3-0) in the 27-game series between the two schools that began in 1980. FIU now leads the series 23-3-1.

FAU out-shot the Golden Panthers 6-5 in a scoreless first half. The first ten minutes included two shots on goal by the Owls and yellow cards given to Kristoffer Aarskog and Diego Monsalve, who were perhaps looking to set the tone.

The deadlock was broken in the 74th minute when Garbee scored on a penalty, giving FAU a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Rustin Kluge capitalized on a mistake by FIU goalkeeper Shawn Crowe and passed to Totland who proceeded to score his second goal of the season.

Anders Grandstad made three saves on the way to his first shutout of the season and ensured the Golden Panthers were held scoreless at home for only the third time since the beginning of the 2001 season.

Aarskog finished with a game-high four shots and FAU out-shot FIU 16-11, despite losing the corner count 6-2.
