Florida Atlantic Sweeps FAU Classic

Sept. 16, 2007

Box Score

BOCA RATON, FL - With their second win in a row, the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team climbed back to the .500 mark after a 2-0 decision over Georgia State at FAU Field Sunday.

Spectacular play by goalkeeper Phillip Lamarre once again paced the Owls, as the sophomore recorded his second consecutive shutout of 2007. Lamarre stopped two shots on goal in each of the weekend's games, for a total of four in the tournament.

Junior forward Shire Standnes opened the scoring for FAU, finishing a rebound off a header from teammate Gianni Piccoletti in the game's 26th minute. The marker was the second of the season for Standnes, who was also the team leader in shots with six.

Dag Bjorgum continued the Norwegian invasion, notching his second goal of the year as well. The junior forward gathered a pass from Trevor Pluskota, beating Panthers goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho with a steady shot to the right side in the 76th minute. Bjorgum and fellow countryman Standnes are both natives of Oslo, Norway.

Florida Atlantic put together their most complete effort of the season, outshooting Georgia State by a remarkable 19-6 margin. The Owls also registered 10 shots on goal.

In the day's early game, part of the annual FAU Classic, Iona bounced back from Friday's 1-0 double overtime loss to FAU with a spirited 2-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast. Junior Aly Lo and Sophomore Giovanni Destasio each scored for the Gaels in the win. Both teams finished the weekend with 1-1 records, while Georgia State finished 0-2.

Florida Atlantic (3-3-0) next faces New Jersey Institute of Technology this Friday at 7 p.m. in their first conference game, and first road game, of the season. Fans can follow the action live by logging onto GameTracker at fausports.com.
