FAU Falls in Final Seconds to UNLV
Sept. 9, 2007
BOCA RATON, FL - It was a tale of two halves and a heartbreaking finish for the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team, as a free kick in the waning moments decided the outcome in a 2-1 loss to UNLV at FAU Field Sunday. UNLV junior forward Lamar Neagle launched a free kick from just outside the penalty box that ricocheted into the net past Phillip Lamarre at 89:56 for the game-winner. FAU struck first on a goal by Liam Ogle in the 41st minute. Javier Carillo sent a pass ahead to Ogle, who fired an initial shot denied by Rebels goalkeeper Calvin Bailey. A clean return on the rebound allowed Ogle to bury a second shot for the junior forward's first goal of the season and a 1-0 Owls lead. Florida Atlantic controlled much of the action in the first half, including an incredible save by Lamarre in the late stages on a point-blank shot to keep FAU in front at intermission. The tables quickly turned in the second half, as UNLV gained the equalizer within the first minute of the frame. Rebels forward Daniel Cruz took a crisp pass from fellow freshman Stephen Sifuentes, then threw a fake to elude Lamarre and knot the score at one. FAU outshot UNLV 12-8 on the day, led by five from Ogle and three from junior Shire Standnes. With their first win, the Rebels improve to 1-3-1 on the season.
Florida Atlantic (1-3-0) next hosts the FAU Classic, beginning Friday at 5 p.m. with Georgia State taking on Florida Gulf Coast at FAU Field. The Owls face the Gaels of Iona College in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. FAU fans can follow the action online via GameTracker at fausports.com.
