Men's Soccer Falls to Belmont 2-1

Sept. 6, 2002

Stats

The Florida Atlantic men's soccer team lost to in-conference rival Belmont University 2-1 Friday night as their record now falls to 0-2-1. The Owls led in every offensive category but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Bjorn Totland scored the first goal of the season for FAU with 15 minutes left in the game, but Tyler Suffron scored three minutes later off of a deflection for what ended up to be the game-winner.

FAU went down early in the game when Fernando Castellanos scored on a give and go from Suffron in the 25th minute. But the Owls did not give up. They dominated the game with 23 shots, 14 coming in the first half, but were not able to capitalize on any of them. Totland led the team with seven shots for the Owls as Belmont keeper Matt Renfrow saved a flurry of shots.

"This was a very hard working game," said head coach Kos Donev. "We probably dominated 80 percent of the game but things just didn't go your way. Soccer is a very peculiar game and we did everything possible to win except put the ball in the net. We just did not control early and capitalize on our shots."

The defense allowed only seven shots the entire game with only three shots allowed on goal. Two of the three shots though were put into the back of the net.

Florida Atlantic continues their season on Sunday, September 8th in Nashville, TN versus Vanderbilt University at 1:00 pm eastern time. The Owls first home game is Saturday, September 14th versus FIU at 7:30 pm.
