FAU men soccer open with 2-1 (2ot) loss

Tampa FL - ,Tampa, FL - Florida Atlantic University's men's soccer team (0-1) opens the 2001 campaign with a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Lafayette College (1-1).

FAU opened the scoring at 8:50 of the first half on an unassisted goal by senior Emilliano Arnaes. Lafayette answered with a goal by Ralph Rapuano on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute.

The two teams then played a scoreless second half and went into overtime, tied 1-1. Shots at the end of regulation were FAU 11, Lafayette 12.

In overtime, the teams played through the first overtime with no goals and went into the second overtime when Nick Caiella of Lafayette scored in the 112 minute to end the match.

FAU junior goalkeeper Jonas Kolstad played the entire match and made six saves in the contest. Final shots on goal were FAU 14 and Lafayette 14.

Next match for the FAU men's team will be 6 pm, Saturday, September 8, against Birmingham Southern at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Tournament.
