Men's Golf Has Record-Setting Day

Nov. 11, 2002

DELAND, FL - Florida Atlantic University shot a 16-under par 272 in the Monday's second round of the Stetson Intercollegiate to take a commanding 12-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round. The dominant Owls' effort included a career-best, eight-under 64 by FAU's Nicolai Syvertsen, who owns a three stroke lead over the rest of the field.

Four of the top ten golfers in the field belong to the Owls. Joel Gibbons and Matt Anderson are each tied for fourth. Gibbons shot a five-under 67, also a career-best, while Anderson was even on the day. Both are three-under for the tournament. Brandon Smith went three-under on Monday and is tied for ninth at two-under for the tournament.

The 272 by the Owls is the team's best round since moving to Division I nine years ago. The Owls, which trailed Stetson by one stroke entering the day, stand at 560 for the tournament, 12 strokes ahead of South Carolina State and 20 strokes ahead of third-place Bethune-Cookman.

The 54-hole competition concludes Tuesday at the 6,328-yard, par-72 Southridge Golf Club. The Owls are looking to conclude their best fall season in recent years, having already placed in the top-three in two of their previous three competitions.
