Men's Golf Starts Strong

Sept. 24, 2002

MIAMI, FL - Florida Atlantic University began its season with a third-place finish at the College Preview Classic in Miami, FL. The Owls fired a three-round total of 913 at the Doral Golf Resort. The first two rounds took place on the Blue Monster while the final round was played on the Great White Course.

Sophomore Joel Gibbons led the Owls with a 54-hole total of 223. Gibbons shot a two-over par 74 on the 7,125-yard Blue Monster. He followed that up later in the day with a four-over par 76. In Tuesday's final round, Gibbons fired a one-over par 73 on the Great White Course. In all, Gibbons finished tied for fourth.

Matt Anderson took second-place honors for the Owls with a total of 229. Anderson tied Gibbons with a final round best of 73. Anderson finished tied for 12th overall.

Other finishers for FAU included Scott Kennedy with a 230, Nicolai Syvertsen (233), and Brnadon Smith (240).

Florida Gulf Coast won the tournament with an 897 while San Francisco finished second at 911. The field included a total of 25 teams.

Florida Atlantic next takes part in the Charleston Southern Fall Invitational October 7-8 in Charleston, SC.
