Daytona Beach, FL. - The men's golf team of Florida Atlantic University shot its second lowest opening round of the spring, 291, to finish fifth at the 2003 Atlantic Sun Championship at Indigo Lakes Golf Club. Mike Cleary, playing in only his second tournament of the year, finished in a tie for 11th after shooting even par on the par 72, 6908-yard course. Two other Owls finished in the top-20.

Cleary opened the tournament with a front nine score of 35 and a back nine score of 37 to finish even par, five back from the leader Barry Roof from the University of Central Florida. Joel Gibbons and Nicolai Syvertsen recorded identical front and back nine scores to go two-over par and finish in a tie for 19th place. A-Sun Golfer-of-the-Week Matt Anderson fired a 75 while Scott Kennedy shot a 76. The three Owls in the top-20 marks the second time that FAU has had three players in the top-20 after the first round this spring.

FAU continued to play great team golf with its fourth consecutive round under 300, going back to last week's tournament. The Owls are only 12-strokes back from the leader, Georgia State University, while holding onto the fifth spot over Belmont University (296). Jacksonville State University (284), UCF (289) and Campbell University (291) round out the top five.

Round two continues Thursday, April 17, followed by the final round on Friday, April 18.
