Jacksonville, AL. - Florida Atlantic University's men's golf team struggled on the first day of the Amoco Ultimate/Young Oil Intercollegiate hosted by Jacksonville State University at the Silver Lakes Golf Club, shooting a team round of 315 to finish tied for 14th. Nicolai Syvertsen was the lone bright spot as he finished three-over par and tied for 15th heading into the second round of the 6846-yard, par 72 course.

Syvertsen, a senior from Oslo, Norway, opened the round shooting a front nine 37 but faltered one stroke on the back to shoot a 38. Matt Anderson shot a promising 37 on the front but could not maintain the momentum on the back nine and shot a 41. Joel Gibbons and Scott Kennedy fired rounds of 79 and 81 respectively, while freshman Cris Anderson shot a round of 90 in his first collegiate tournament.

Atlantic Sun Conference member JSU shot a 292 to lead after the first round with fellow A-Sun member Samford finishing in a tie for third with a round of 298. Armstrong Atlantic College (296), University of South Alabama (298) and Columbus State University (301) round out the top five. A-Sun schools Troy State (303), University of Central Florida (309), Belmont (315) and Stetson (329) finished 6th, 10th, 16th and 18th respectively.

Second round action was suspended due to darkness and will pick up where it left off Tuesday, April 1st, immediately followed by the final round.
