FAU Wins Treasure Coast Men's Classic
March 4, 2009 BOCA RATON, FL- The Florida Atlantic University golf team won the Treasure Coast Men's Classic by hitting back-to-back season low rounds (283, 278-561). The two round tournament was held at Indian Hills Country Club (6,430 Yards/71 PAR) in Fort Pierce, FL. "I feel great for these guys, they have worked hard" head coach Angelo Sands commented. The second year head coach had previously won several dual meets but this is his first tournament victory. Sands, who is celebrating his birthday today, added "It was a great 62nd birthday present for me". Freshman Justin Thompson (70, 65- 135) won the tournament and hit seven under par. Thompson's first competition of the season was earlier this week when he finished second in FAU's dual meet win over the University of Dayton. "The team struck the ball very well and we made a lot of puts" Thompson said of his team's performance. "I thought we played well in the windy conditions". Kelly McHugh (67, 70- 137) was runner-up to Thompson and Sterling Searcy Jr. (69, 71- 140) also had a top five finish. Ben Silverman (77, 72- 149) and Jared Miller (79, 72 -152) rounded out FAU's scoring five. Five Owls competed as individuals with Carl McCauley leading the way with a sixth place finish and Billy Bowling at fourteenth. FAU will continue play tomorrow at Ocean Breeze Country Club in Boca Raton with a dual meet against Niagara University.
