FAU/ FIU Football Trophy Named the Don Shula Award

Nov. 20, 2002

BOCA RATON -

Collegiate football is measured by wins and losses, but the experience gained is what shapes the men they hope to become. Two men who have been given the charge of adding football to the south Florida universities, Howard Schnellenberger at Florida Atlantic University and Don Strock at Florida International University, honor a coach who helped shape their coaching careers by naming the soon to be annual trophy awarded to the victor, the Don Shula Award.

The joint announcement made by the universities comes just three day prior to the game scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday, November 23. The "GAME" promises to be the next great rivalry.

Like Schnellenberger's and Strock's NFL careers, the game will begin with Shula. Shula will be on board a 1942 fire truck which will carry him and several members of the Dolphins 1972 undefeated team to the pre-game pep rally. He will deliver the game ball to the stadium where he enjoyed extraordinary success. At game's end, the legendary coach will present either his former offensive coordinator, Schnellenberger, or his quarterback, Strock, with a trophy which will be held at the winning university until the next contest is fought.

"Don Shula is a legend who has achieved so very much for the game of football in South Florida and the nation. By lending his name to this award he continues to give back to the South Florida football community," said Schnellenberger. "It is not very often that two start-up programs would have such wonderful support from a person of Don Shula's stature. As both universities are working to establish football traditions, Coach Shula's trophy will serve as a symbol of inspiration."

The Trophy

The trophy is 70 inches tall when fully assembled.
The upper deck of the trophy showcases both universities' helmets.
Each year a plate will be added to reflect the winner and the game's score.
The trophy will be housed at the winning university.
In honor of the players, the media in attendance, will be asked to vote for the game's standing player(s) who will be recognized on the base of the trophy.
