Nov. 15, 2007

Florida Atlantic University offensive guard Jarrid Smith is one of 10 national finalists for the Awards and Recognition Association (ARA) national sportsmanship award. The award is given to one Division I football player who is a starter or significant contributor on his team, and demonstrates respect for his competitors and school.

Smith is a fifth-year senior starting left guard. He already has earned a degree in political science and is currently working on a second degree in intercultural communication. Off the field, Smith volunteers for the Jim Thorpe Native American All-Star Game and teaches football to kids through his work with the Chaka Stars Foundation.

The finalists for the ARA sportsmanship award are chosen by a panel of former coaches, sports and media professionals, and representatives from the ARA and other organizations. The winner of the ARA award will be announced in December. Last year's champion was former Rutgers University running back Brian Leonard, who is currently playing in the NFL for the St. Louis Rams.
