Offense Dominates Fanfest Scrimmage

Aug. 16, 2008

BOCA RATON, FL - Preseason Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year threw for almost 200 yards in leading FAU's offense to a 42-11 win over the defense in the first fall scrimmage held on Saturday as part of Fanfest.

"When you have a quarterback like Rusty, he can make an awful good defense look bad," said head coach Howard Schnellenberger.

Smith completed 12 of his 16 attempts on Saturday for 196 yards, in addition to three touchdown passes. Backup quarterback Jeff Van Camp was 13-of-20 for 148 yards, and ran for a score, but also threw an interception. David Kooi and Graham Wilbert also saw action under center. Charles Pierre was the game's leading rusher, gaining 32 yards on four carries and a touchdown.

Chris Bonner was the leading receiver for the Owls, reeling in five catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Darrein Thomas and Malik Eugene each picked off a pass and Michael Hancock recovered a fumble, accounting for nine of the defense's 11 points. Eugene was the game's leading tackler, with five and a half tackles and a sack in addition to his interception.

The Owls' return to the practice field tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. and will hold their second scrimmage of the fall on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
