Offense Wins first Spring Scrimmage 24-22
April 8, 2006 Boca Raton, FL - Saturday afternoon the Owls began the day with a regular practice workout and then moved into a 90-play scrimmage that saw the offense pull away with a scrimmage ending touchdown by quarterback Rusty Smith and a 24-22 offensive victory. Holding true to format, three quarterbacks worked out and ran the offense that scores in a traditional fashion. In the scrimmage format, the defense is awarded a point for each three and out, three points for a turnover unless it results in a score and that is scored traditionally. In the first two series the offense was stopped in three for a defensive point and then moved the ball to the 17 before E.J. Jones batted down an interception to give the defense a 0-4 advantage. The momentum shifted the third series. McKinson Souverain drove the length but couldn't punch it in. Souverain gave way to Rusty Smith who ran the next 11 plays before alternating with Souverain. Souverain orchestrated the next scoring drive with a 33-yard pass to Frantz Simeon. "The scrimmage was a little disjointed but, we are where we are and we got it on tape and will have the opportunity to straighten out anything that needs to be," said Howard Schnellenberger. One of the highlights was the team's ability to run and to a quarterback, they credited the offensive line. "The line is night and day a head of where they were a year ago," said Clayton. "Coach Smith, the strength coach, has done great things with them. They are two times stronger and have four starters back, including Brandon Jackson."
Defensively, the Owls recorded three interceptions, one per quarterback, and one resulted in a score for a total of 12 points on turnovers and then recorded 10 stops on third down for their 22 point final.
