![]() Football Replaces Two, Reorganizes for 2003
March 24, 2003 David Dunn and Eli Rasheed have joined Florida Atlantic University's football staff and will use Spring drills to become acquainted with both the players and the program, announced Howard Schnellenberger. David Dunn joins the staff after serving as Pope John Paul II's head coach the last two seasons. In all, Dunn has two years professional experience, eight years of collegiate experience and eight years high school head coaching experience. "We are delighted to have someone with so much background at all levels of football," said Schnellenberger. "David will be working with the running backs and will add to our recruiting staff in south Florida."
Dunn, who will work with FAU's running game, gained his first head coaching experience at Masuk High School in Monroe, CT. He guided Masuk to the 1995 and 1996 SWC Colonial Division Championship and was the 1996 Class L State Semi-Finalist. His five-year stint concluded with a 29-12 mark. Most recently, he guided Pope to the 2001 and 2002 District Runner-up finishes. Pope led the District in total offense and defense and the team was a state qualifier.
In between the two positions, Dunn guided Columbus High School to the 1999 and 2000 District Championship, with two-consecutive undefeated district seasons. Columbus defeated the no. 6 ranked team in the country and was rated Dade County's no. 2 defensive team and was no. 1 defending the run. He has also been a part of collegiate staffs at Harvard, Indiana State and San Diego. Dunn is a 1989 graduate of the University of San Diego with a BA in Business. He received his teaching certificate from Sacred Heart University in 1996. Eli Rasheed will gain his first collegiate coaching experience at FAU. Rasheed joins the staff after spending the last seven years on the high school level, where he coached both football and track. He made his coaching debut at Venice High School as the assistant coach for a program that captured the Florida 5A State, Regional and District Championships in 2000. VHS also captured the 1999 District Championship. Rasheed worked his way up the ladder at Venice. He first served as the special teams coordinator, then he became the defensive line coach and was finally the defensive coordinator. "Eli has been both a head coach and a defensive coordinator at the high school level," said Schnellenberger. "He brings enthusiasm and a new perspective on defensive line play as he was an All-Big 10 defensive lineman at Indiana. Coming from the Sarasota area he will also bring the knowledge of high school players from that area." Following his stint at Venice, Rasheed became the Varsity Head Coach for Booker High School. He guided Booker to the 3A District Play-offs and finished the season with a 6-5 record, he also served as both the defensive coordinator and the special teams coordinator. He then returned to Venice where he served as an assistant coach last season. In his lone year, Rasheed guided Venice to the Florida 6A Regional and District Championships. Rasheed earned a BA in Criminal Justice from Indiana University in 1995 and is currently working towards his master's degree. Upon the hiring of Dunn and Rasheed, Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger has reorganized the staff to cover the following areas:
