FAU Snaps Three-Game Slide With 26-23 Win Over North Texas

Nov. 12, 2005

Final Stats

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP)- Daniel Kennard kicked a 33-yard field goal with 1:38 left in the game to give Florida Atlantic a 26-23 victory Saturday over North Texas.

Kennard's kick capped a 9-play, 49-yard Florida Atlantic drive that came after a game-tying, 47-yard field goal by North Texas kicker Nick Bazaldua with 5:35 left in the game.

After Kennard's go-ahead field goal, North Texas (2-7, 2-3 Sun Belt) advanced the ball to the Florida Atlantic 30-yard line. But Bazaldua's next 47-yard field goal attempt with eight seconds to go hit the right upright and bounced wide.

Charles Pierre rushed for two touchdowns and Dantson Dareus caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Sean Clayton (13-22 for 151 yards) for Florida Atlantic (2-8, 2-4 Sun Belt).

North Texas rallied from 17 points behind in the fourth quarter with the help of quarterback Matt Phillips (8-16 for 138 yards), who scored a rushing touchdown and threw for another touchdown.

After Dareus caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Clayton that extended Florida Atlantic's lead to 23-6 with 11:35 left in the game, the Owls seemed to be cruising to victory. But North Texas wasn't ready to give up.

Phillips ran five yards for a touchdown that closed the gap to 20-13, and North Texas recovered an onside kick on its own 47-yard line. On the next play, Phillips passed to Joel Nwigwe running across the middle of the field. Nwigwe broke a tackle and scored on the 53-yard catch to make the score 23-20.
