2006: Schnellenberger announced Rusty Smith as the Owls' opening day starter..."It was a very close decision to make, almost as close as it could get," said Schnellenberger. "The fact that Rusty made such extraordinary progress in the spring and fall makes us think he's our best option out there." ...Smith had entered spring practice with a three-way race...following his start at Clemson, he moved into a back-up position, which allowed for his true development...he served in that role while averaging more than nine passes a game until an injury moved him back into the starting role, a position he held the remainder of the season...most productive game was against Troy in which he tossed 37 passes and connected 24 times for a season and career high 312 yards, including two Touchdowns...longest pass of the season was a 54-yarder to Frantz Simeon against Troy...tallied more than 100 passing yards in his last four games...averaged 203.5 in that span while holding interceptions to three.
2005: Had a strong first fall of practice...traveled with the team and worked with the coaches calling in the play...elected to redshirt...following a strong fall he vied for a starting spot under center.
High School: Ran the offensive unit for Adam Guies...completed 105 passes in 176 attempts for 1,800 yards and 21 touchdowns, with just three interceptions as a senior...started for the North in the Jacksonville Shrine All-Star game...two-sport athlete (football and baseball).
Personal: Information management systems major...son of Russell and Melody Smith...born Jan. 28, 1987, in Jacksonville, FL.
