The campus halls are devoid of ivy and the school lacks the tradition that infused his last three places of business - Kansas, Notre Dame and North Carolina. But, to Matt Doherty, Florida Atlantic University offers compensatory advantages, not the least of which is a blank canvas. Whatever the Owls accomplish in basketball under their new head coach will not be compared to the work of predecessors.

Two years after being forced out at Chapel Hill and two weeks after the players he recruited led the Tar Heels to the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship, Doherty rejoined the coaching ranks yesterday.
