Owls' Doherty Serving as Analyst for March Madness with ESPN

March 15, 2006

BOCA RATON, FL - One of America's most versatile college basketball coaches continues to make the rounds on television to offer his analysis of March Madness.

After appearing on "Sports Talk Live" on Sun Sports this past Monday, Florida Atlantic University men's basketball coach Matt Doherty will be a featured analyst with ESPNU for week one of the NCAA Championships. Doherty can be seen on the college sports network's "The U" this Thursday through Sunday.

With experience playing and coaching at the highest level of college basketball, Doherty brings insight not only into player talent and execution on the court but has a background that provides him with unique knowledge of the teams participating in the tournament. Doherty played and coached at the University of North Carolina, the no. 3 seed in the Washington, D.C. regional, for a total of seven years.

Doherty worked with current UNC head coach Roy Williams for seven years at Kansas, the no. 4 seed in the Oakland regional. He also was an assistant coach for three years at Davidson, which took the no. 15 seed in the Minneapolis regional.

Doherty has coached against 25 teams that qualified for this year's field of 65, including the likes of no. 1 seeds Duke, Connecticut and Villanova and no. 2 seed Ohio State. He holds wins over 17 of those teams, including 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference champion Belmont, which garnered the no. 15 seed in the Oakland regional.

Doherty also has knowledge of at least one of the teams qualifying for the women's tournament, that being coach Chancellor Dugan's Florida Atlantic Owls. Dugan and the no. 16 Owls face no. 1 seed LSU in Nashville on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Doherty's appearances this postseason are not the first time he has been under the bright lights of television as an analyst. He also worked in the field from 2003 to 2005 with ESPN, CSTV and C-SET (Carolina Sports Entertainment Television).

Doherty can be seen on ESPNU's "The U" starting Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. He will also appear on Friday from 10-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
