Owls Downed by Dolphins

Feb. 14, 2004

Final Stats

BOCA RATON, FL - Aubrey Conerly converted a three-point play with 7.8 seconds remaining to lift Jacksonville University over Florida Atlantic University, 70-69, Saturday night in Boca Raton. Nolan McBride led all scorers with 18 points while FAU's Mike Bell scored 15. The loss drops FAU to 8-15 on the year and 5-11 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. JU improves to 12-12 and 7-10, respectively.

FAU led 69-65 with 2:16 remaining on a break-away dunk by Kahleaf Watson. That would by the last of FAU's scoring as the Dolphins pulled to within 69-67 on a pair of free throws by Haminn Quaintance with 1:39 left. Each team failed to score on its next possession, and Jimmy Bishop missed a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to set up Conerly's drive at the other end.

The Owls led most of the first half and had a 32-24 advantage with just under four minutes remaining. JU went on a13-2 run and led 38-34 before the Owls closed the half trailing 38-36. Neither team led by more than four points in the second half.

"I was very happy with the effort part of the game tonight," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. "I still feel good things can happen."

The Owls shot 44 percent while the Dolphins went 50 percent from the field. FAU outrebounded JU 36-27.

Earnest Crumbley scored 10 for FAU and was the only other Owl in double-figures. Conerly had 16 with 11 coming in the first half.

Florida Atlantic next faces Georgia State February 19 in Atlanta.
