Diamond Diary by Kevin Cooney
June 14, 2002 Some random thoughts before I get on the road for a week on the farm: The College World Series - I guess I am happy that I will spend the rest of the day driving. I'm not sure that I would enjoy watching the Georgia Tech - South Carolina game. The Major League Draft - One of the best and worst aspects of the job is the draft. There is always a lot of joy and also some heartache on draft day. FAU has been fortunate in recent years, many of our players have been given the opportunity to continue playing baseball at the professional level. But we always have someone who has been hoping to be selected and gets passed over by the draft. This is such a hard thing for kids. They have to answer their friends and families, yet they don't have any answers. Many fine college players are not viewed as prospects and go unselected. This is something that athletes in other sports rarely have to face. Baseball is an "everyman" sport. We all think we have the chance, yet not everyone gets it.
Thank You - So many of our baseball alumni showed up to watch us play in
Atlanta. It was great to see. Jeff Bennet and his Dad, Mr. and Mrs.Covin,
Brian's parents, Tim Spink, Dom Senese, Nick Presto, Sean O'Brien and his
family, Kenny Wagner, Joe Cali, Brent White, Tony Von Doltren and his
bride, George Roig and Katie, Dickie Hart, Garry Kamphouse, and Drew Rickert
come to mind. There may have been some that I didn't see or don't
remember.(imagine that!) Thank you all for the effort made to support us. I
felt that we were playing as much for you guys as for ourselves. To all of
you who called and emailed, especially Rich Freebourne, whose email made me
cry. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. KC
