Three Players Drafted in the Second Day of MLB Draft
June 5, 2002
In the final day of the major league draft, Florida Atlantic University added three players to the mix as two seniors and a high school signee were selected in rounds 41-47. Baltimore drafted two seniors, Jim Cooney and Gabe Somarriba in the 45th and 47th rounds, respectively. Cooney is a left-handed reliever from Morristown, NJ who has thrown 30 innings for Florida Atlantic this season. Cooney had two excellent outings this past weekend at the NCAA Tournament. In three innings pitched he struck out four, walked two and did not allow a run. Somarriba, a senior from Miami, FL, earned All-Tournament honors at the Atlantic Sun Tournament and also at the NCAA Tournament last weekend. The outfielder went 13-for-20 at the A-Sun Tournament and guided FAU to a second-place finish. He hit a grand slam against Auburn in the NCAA Tournament as he hit .316 and drove in six runs as FAU won its first NCAA Regional in history.
The Braves selected David Hayes, who committed to FAU during the signing period, in the 41st round. The right-handed pitcher from Ft. Lauderdale was used primarily as a closer this season at American Heritage High School.
