Diamond Diary by Kevin Cooney
May 24, 2002 STETSON 3 FAU 0 Roger Lincoln came out and threw a gem last night to drop us into the losers' bracket. His 3 - 0 shutout was the first against us in our last 67 games. The frustrating thing was that we had at least three great chances to win. Twice Gabe reached base and was left at third and second, each time with one out and good hitters up. Valdes got a clutch two out double in the eighth, but for naught. Lincoln was everything you want a pitcher to be. Unless you are trying to score off him. So now our work is cut out for us. We face JU in an elimination game at 3:00 pm and the winner plays at 7:00 against the loser of the UCF - Stetson game. Last year JU eliminated us and ended our season in this tournament. That win propelled them into the NCAA tournament and started our summer vacation. Our goal is to reverse that outcome this year. Our guys need to focus on the task at hand and nothing else. Winning this game could be crucial for our regional hopes. At 41-17, we have one of the better records in the nation, but the committee looks at a number of factors in their selection decision. Winning at least one more in this tournament will be important. Playing into the championship day could solidify a bid. Thomas Payne said, "These are times that try men's souls." They weren't playing baseball in 1776, but the thought fits. We have to respond to the challenge ahead. Each inning, each at bat, should be viewed as our last. It's time for our players and coaches to rise above everything and do the job. It's time to reach deep inside our souls and find the strength to answer the bell. Days like today are why we all choose to be part of this life. The reward is so great, the struggle becomes well worth the effort. It's time to make all the practices, long bus rides, bad food, and hot days on the road worth while.
