Baseball Sweeps Weekly A-Sun Honors
May 19, 2003 For the second time this season, No. 11 Florida Atlantic University swept the Atlantic Sun Player-of-the-Week awards. Left-handed pitcher, Randy Beam, and outfielder Jeff Fiorentino both had outstanding weeks as the team went 2-1 and earned the number one seed at the A-Sun Tournament. Beam threw his fourth complete game shutout of the season as FAU defeated Stetson 2-0 on Saturday.The Sarasota, FL native had a perfect game going into the fifth inning before he gave up a lead off walk and two hits. He only faced one over the minimum in the final two innings as he improved to 12-1. He is holding opponents to a .196 average. Fiorentino (Hollywood, FL) led the team for the weekend in batting average (.667), doubles (2), total bases (11), slugging percentage (1.222), on-base percentage (.769), stolen bases (2) and walks (3). He had a season-high five RBIS on Friday night as he reached base in every at bat and scored three times as he went 3-for-3.
The squad will begin play in the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Wednesday when the team takes on the no. 6 seed Jacksonville University at 11 am. The six-team double-elimination tournament will continue through May 24 at Melching Field at Conrad Park in DeLand, FL
