Rain Squelches Hot Bats

March 16, 2004

A drenching rain fell during the bottom half of the fifth inning as no. 14 Florida Atlantic University was leading Iona College 12-1 and the game was called with five innings complete. FAU improves to 19-2, while the Gaels drop to 2-12. Jason Costello picks up his first win in his first start after pitching five innings and striking out three.

FAU jumped on top early with three multiple run innings. The first three batters of the game, Derek Hutton, Mike McBryde and Jeff Fiorentino all reached base and eventually came around to score to take the 3-0 lead.

Iona would post its only run of the game in the second frame as Costello (Clearwater, FL) gave up a leadoff double to left fielder Kevin Sorhaindo. He would move to third on a ground ball before scoring on a sacrifice fly off of the bat of James LaSala.

Six hits in the second inning added four more runs on to FAU's lead before three unearned runs in the third gave FAU its most runs since February 6 against Florida International.

Jessie Tucker (0-1) suffers the loss after he worked 1 1/3 innings and allowed eight runs on six hits. Rich Connolly and Nick Stanziani worked out of the pen.

Derek Hutton (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) and Tim Mascia (Wellington, FL) each finished with two hits, while Alex Fonseca's three RBI paced Florida Atlantic.

FAU returns to play Rutgers on Wednesday evening at 7 pm. St. Patrick's Day will be honored with green uniforms, green bases and Irish music. Fans wearing green get half price admission and a free soda.
