Florida Atlantic University tied a record for the longest game in its Division I history with a 13-inning marathon to open the 2005 season. A Jordan Hafer sacrifice fly to right field allowed Tim Mascia to score from third base to give FAU a 7-6 win over Cincinnati Friday night at FAU Stadium.

Freshman pitcher Mickey Storey (Deerfield Beach, FL) came out of the bullpen in the ninth inning to shutdown the Bearcat offense. In his first collegiate outing he threw 4 2/3 innings, did not allow a hit and struck out six as he picked up the win.

"I was very proud of the relief effort from Storey," said head coach Kevin Cooney. "He came in to settle down the team and pitched a great game."

After being down 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh, FAU (1-0) rallied for one run in the bottom of the inning as Jonathon Shapland led off with a single. Mike McBryde and Alex Silversmith followed with singles to bring the score to within three.

Five straight base hits in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed FAU to tie the contest. Storey held Cincinnati (0-1) off the base paths and saw FAU squander several scoring opportunities.

In the 11th inning Florida Atlantic left the bases loaded as Mike Foley entered to strike out the final two batters of the inning. FAU left 14 runners on base during the evening.

A leadoff double by Alex Fonseca (Tallahassee, FL) in the 12th inning did not produce a run as a very athletic double play by Cincinnati first baseman Logan Parker ended the threat.

Sean Munninghoff suffered the loss for the Bearcats after he threw 1/3 of an inning and allowed one run on a hit and two walks.

Cincinnati shortstop Mark Haske and FAU catcher Alex Silversmith both recorded three hits in the game, while Hafer led all players with three RBI.

The two teams will meet in the second game of the three game series on Saturday at 2 pm.
