Storey Throws Complete Game Shutout

May 26, 2005

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University's Mickey Storey threw a complete game shutout to pick up a win over Stetson University Thursday night at the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Storey allowed only four hits in his longest outing of the season as FAU remained undefeated in tournament play as they defeated the Hatters 3-0.

FAU (35-20) picked up its first hit of the contest in the third inning off of Nathan Nery. Tyler Stevens (West Palm Beach, FL) led off the inning with a single to left field and moved to third on two ground outs. The second baseman was left stranded after Nery struck out his third batter of the game.

In the fourth inning, Alex Fonseca came just a foot short of giving FAU the lead as Adam Tindle caught the ball at the top of the left field fence.

First Team All-Conference selection Storey gave up his first hit to the Hatters in the fourth. John DeStefano dropped a ball over shortstop Fonseca's head for a double. DeStefano remained stranded at second as Storey recorded two ground outs and a fly out to get out of the inning.

A Stetson error in the fourth inning allowed three FAU runs in the sixth inning. After Jordan Hafer reached on an error, Mike McBryde and Tim Mascia loaded the bases with bunts. Fonseca put a run on the board in his third at bat of the contest with a ground out that allowed Hater to score. After an intentional walk to load the bases for the second time in the inning, catcher Justin Martin continued his timely hitting as he plated two more runs on a single to centerfield. During the month of May, Martin is hitting .444.

With the lead, Storey continued to go after the Stetson hitters. In the eighth he struck out the side and in the ninth he struck out the final batter of the contest, Chris Johnson to pick up his eighth straight win. Storey improves to 9-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 1.77 for the season after he allowed only four hits and struck out seven.

"That is the best stuff that Storey has thrown in the last three of four weeks," said FAU head coach Kevin Cooney.

It is the first complete game thrown by an FAU pitcher since Will Mann threw a complete game last year at the NCAA Regional against NC State. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Florida Atlantic.

FAU is the only remaining undefeated team in the A-Sun Tournament and will play next on Friday at 7 pm. The opponent will be the winner of the 11 am match up between Gardner-Webb and Stetson.
