Baseball Bows Out of A-Sun Tournament

May 24, 2003

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University bowed out of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament after falling to Stetson University 8-1 Saturday night in DeLand, FL. The Hatters move on to the championship game tomorrow to face Jacksonville University.

Stetson (39-21) scored two runs in the second, third and fourth innings. FAU (46-14) starting pitcher, Travis NeSmith was chased after he worked 2 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. The lead off batter reached base in each inning and came around to score as the Hatters jumped out to a 6-1 lead. FAU's one-run came in the second inning as Mike Cox collected his 11th home run of the season.

Two remained the magic number for SU as the team scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning. FAU used five pitchers in the contest and allowed 13 hits. The team has not allowed more than 10 hits since April 25th when it gave up 13 hits to Troy State University in a conference game.

Andy Wilson who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs led Stetson.

Hatters' starting pitcher Adam Blair pitched the first complete game of his career to improve to 2-2. The right-hander struck out one and only allowed four hits as he controlled the FAU offense.

"Blair pitched a great game," said head coach Kevin Cooney. "Stetson came out and put up runs and he kept putting goose eggs up on the scoreboard."

FAU will hold an NCAA Selection Show party at Bud Murphy's in Boca Raton on Monday, May 26th at 12:30 pm. The show will be aired on ESPN2 as FAU awaits an at-large bid to an NCAA Regional.
