Baseball Clinches A-Sun Title

May 16, 2003

Final Stats

No. 11 Florida Atlantic University (43-11, 24-7) clinched the Atlantic Sun Conference title with a 16-5 victory over Stetson University. This is the first time since 1999 that FAU has won the conference.

FAU's starting pitcher, Danny Core, got off to a rough start against SU as he gave up four hits and three runs in the first. The senior from Pembroke Pines settled down and pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out two. With the win, Core improves to 8-2.

Three hits and two runs in the first inning was only a preview of a big offensive night for No. 11 Florida Atlantic University. A two-run home run by Jeff Fiorentino, his 14th of the season, brought FAU to within one run at 3-2.

Florida Atlantic's lead off hitter in each inning managed to reach base by a walk or being hit by pitch. The runner played in FAU's favor as it went on to score in the next six innings to defeat the number two team in the conference.

Adam Townsend, Stetson's starting pitcher, was chased after 2 1/3 innings after he gave up six runs on five hits. The junior falls to 3-3 this season while the team drops to 35-19, 20-11.

Rusty Brown led FAU's attack with a 5-for-6 performance with five RBIs. He extended his hitting streak to 18 games with four singles and a double.

The two teams will continue play on Saturday in a 1 pm doubleheader as FAU honors its seniors in their final home game.
