Owls Split Doubleheader with Belmont

April 22, 2006

Final Stats

In a doubleheader with Belmont University on Saturday afternoon, Florida Atlantic University took the first game 6-4 before dropping game two 10-2. With a home run and a double in game one, Travis Ozga helped guide the Owls to a win. FAU finished the day with a 21-19, 7-10 A-Sun record, while the Bruins are 19-21, 7-13 A-Sun record.

The Owls started the scoring early. Jordan Hafer started the afternoon with a single up the middle and eventually scored on an Belmont error. A run in the second came on Ozga's second home run of the season.

Leadoff walks in the fourth and sixth innings hurt Belmont starter Charles Lee as FAU scored both times.

Ozga's double to start the seventh and Belmont's second error of the game led to FAU's last two runs.

Lee (3-4) suffered the loss after he pitched a complete game. He allowed six runs, four earned on seven hits and struck out four.

His counterpart, Mickey Storey earned the win to improve to 5-6 after he threw 7 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out five.

Belmont's first two runs came after doubles in the fourth and seventh innings. With one out in the eighth inning, the Bruins struck for an additional two runs as Storey issued his only walk of the game. A double, a sacrifice fly and a single finished the scoring.

Ben Petsch, Wilson Tucker and Kane Simmons each led the Bruins with two hits.

The Belmont offensive exploded in game two with five runs in the first two innings on seven hits. Joel Schmal entered in relief and did not allow a hit in the third, fourth or fifth innings. A two run homer by Carlo Testa in the sixth inning started the scoring in the late innings as Belmont added an additional five runs in the final three innings.

The Owls scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings. Tim Mascia started the fifth with a leadoff double and was driven in by William Block. In the sixth inning, Hafer started the inning with a single before an Ovy Ramirez double plated FAU's second run.

Will Mann suffered the loss for FAU to fall to 2-1, while Josh Moffitt earned the win in a complete game effort. He struck out 11 and allowed two runs on six hits.

The teams will close out the Atlantic Sun Conference series on Sunday with a 2 p.m. et contest.
