Baseball Defeats UALR 4-2

April 15, 2007

Final Stats

The Florida Atlantic University pitching staff held UALR to two runs and the FAU offense put two run on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a 4-2 win in the final game of the Sun Belt series. Alex Pepe earned the win for the Owls to improve to 4-0 on the year and the team's record stands at 24-14, 7-11 SBC. The Trojans fell to 14-21, 4-10 SBC after taking the first two games of the series.

After allowing two doubles in the second inning, FAU starter Justin Phillabaum settled in and only allowed three hits in the rest of his 6 2/3 innings.

"Phillabaum pitched a great game on a day when we needed a good outing by our starter," said FAU Head Coach Kevin Cooney. "Pepe came in and gave a good performance and solidified our bullpen with his effort."

Phillabaum struck out five before Alex Pepe entered to throw 2 1/3 innings and only allowed two hits.

The FAU offense rallied and scored two runs in both the fifth and eighth innings. Four base hits in the fifth inning allowed the Owls to tie the contest at two. After starting the inning with a single, Joe Campbell recorded to outs before he gave up a single to Mike McKenna, an RBI single to Travis Ozga and an RBI double to Daniel Cook.

In the seventh inning, FAU had a chance to take the lead by squandered a scoring chance by leaving the bases loaded. In the ninth, the Florida Atlantic once again loaded the bases and the Trojans looked to be out of the inning with a fly ball to left field by a fielding error allowed two runs to score.

The FAU offense was led by a 3-for-4 performance from Cook, while Brian Asbill and Brad Swiderski both finished with two hits at the bottom of UALR's lineup.

After recording a save in last night's contest, Steve Gilgenbach (0-2) suffered the loss after he allowed two run on two hits in his one inning of work.

FAU will return to face North Florida on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at FAU Stadium. The Owls return to conference play next weekend when they travel to New Orleans for a three-game series.
