Baseball Wins Series Over Belmont 10-1, 6-3

April 5, 2003

Final Stats

A complete game pitching performance by Randy Beam and three FAU home runs highlighted Florida Atlantic University's two wins on Saturday over visiting Belmont University. FAU won the battle between the top two teams in the conference with 10-1, 6-4 victories in the Atlantic Sun conference doubleheader.

Belmont (15-12, 11-7 A-Sun) scored its only run in game one in the first inning after two singles and FAU starting pitcher Randy Beam hit Jason Warpool to load the bases with no one out. The Bruins only managed one run out of the situation as Dan Soukup recorded an RBI single. The next two batters flew out before a ground ball ended the ending.

FAU (30-8, 14-4 A-Sun) faced the only right-handed starting pitcher of the weekend in game one as Shane Haas got the start. Haas worked four innings and allowed five runs on four hits. He gave up a two-run home run to Jeff Fiorentino for his conference leading 11th homer.

Jason Webster entered in relief in the fifth and gave up a three-run home run to Matt Pali down the right field line. Rusty Brown took Webster out of the game in the sixth when he hit his seventh home run of the season to plate the final two runs of the game.

Randy Beam pitched his second complete game of the season and scattered six hits, struck out one and did not allow a walk to improve to 8-1.

Belmont took a 3-0 lead into the middle of the fourth inning after the lead off hitter reached base in both the third and fourth innings. Josh Meade made his first start of the series in game three and led off the third inning with a walk. Meade advanced on a balk before Ryan Pettit singled through the right side to give Belmont the 1-0 lead.

Dan Soukup was hit by Travis NeSmith to start the fourth. A walk and an error loaded the bases for a Josh Novak RBI when he was hit by a pitch. With one out, center fielder Jay Pettus recorded a sacrifice fly to right field to give BU its largest margin of the game at 3-0.

Florida Atlantic countered back in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings with two runs in each frame. Rob Horst recorded a two-run single in the fourth. Rusty Brown recorded an RBI in the fifth and sixth innings with his team leading 11th double of the season and a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning for the final run of the game.

Chris Della Rocco recorded his first win of the season after relieving NeSmtih. He worked three innings and struck out two.

Reliever Justin Jordan took the loss for Belmont after he entered in the fifth inning and recorded one inning of work and allowed two hits and two runs.

FAU will play the next six games on the road. The squad travels to Campbell University next weekend for a three-game conference series before heading to Orlando on April 18-19 to take on the University of Central Florida.
