March 25, 2009
BOCA RATON, FL - 1,682 fans came out to watch Wednesday night's college baseball game between the second-ranked University of Miami Hurricanes and homestanding Owls of Florida Atlantic University. It was the third-largest documented crowd in the history of FAU Stadium. The `Canes broke-open a tie game by scoring six runs in the fifth and cruised to a 13-6 win. Vickash Ramjit doubled twice and drove in three runs for Miami (19-5). Ramjit's second double was part Miami's big fifth inning which transformed a 3-3 game into a comfortable six-run Miami lead. Florida Atlantic (14-7) has lost 4 of 5 during its current stretch of playing eight games in 10 days. William Block hit a two-run homer and doubled to finish the night 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs to pace the Owls. Block's fourth homer of the year, a one-out drive to left field in the bottom of the first, put FAU on the scoreboard. It was a two-run shot which made the score 3-2 after UM had struck for three quick runs in the top of the first. Travis Ozga led off the FAU fourth with a double into the left-field gap and would come home on Jeremy Griffiths' RBI groundout, tying the game at three after four innings. FAU's lefty starter Brent Adheen (0-1) retired nine-straight after Miami took its 3-0 lead in the first. Adheen - a true freshman from Ft. Lauderdale - walked three and allowed six hits and left during what turned out to be the decisive six-run UM fifth. A hit batter, two walks and timely two-out singles by Ramjit and Scott Lawson were part of the Miami fifth which put the 'Canes in control 9-3. Ramjit finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBI. Senior right-hander Jason Santana (4-0) pitched well for Miami, earning his fourth win after throwing five-plus innings of three-hit baseball. FAU returns to the field Friday night when a three-game Sun Belt Conference series begins against Louisiana-Monroe. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET at FAU Stadium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
