Stevens Delivers Game-Winning Hit

March 15, 2006

Final Stats

Tyler Stevens delivered a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning as Florida Atlantic University defeated Columbia University 8-7 Wednesday night in Boca Raton. FAU improves to 10-11 and gives head coach Kevin Cooney his 800th career victory, while the Lions fall to 0-10.

Tim Mascia picked up his first home run of the year to give the Owls a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Justin Martin added to the lead with a two-run homer of his own in the fourth. Two singles and two walks led to Florida Atlantic's fourth run as Mascia picked up his second RBI with a walk.

The Lions picked up two runs off of FAU starter Alex Pepe in the second inning. Pepe gave up a leadoff walk and two straight base hits as Spencer Silverstein picked up his first of three RBI.

Silverstein's second two RBI came in the sixth inning when he drove home two with a double down the left field line.

An Alex Silversmith double in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Owls back as two runs crossed the plate but Columbia countered back in the seventh with two unearned runs.

Daniel Bajger came out of the bullpen for the Lions and held the Owls in check in the seventh and eighth before he gave up a single to William Block in the ninth with one out. A ground ball moved Block into scoring position before Stevens hit a ground rule double over the left centerfield fence.

Bajger (0-1) suffered the loss after he gave up one run on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Mike Crotta (1-1) picked up the win after pitching the ninth inning and retiring the side.

Out of FAU's 11 hits, five were extra base hits.

The Owls return to action this weekend for a three-game series against new conference member Kennesaw State.
