March 3, 2007

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University tried to post a comeback with three runs in the eighth inning but could not overcome a four run deficit to fall 6-5 to Boston College on Saturday night at FAU Stadium.

The Eagles picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-3, while FAU falls to 11-3 after dropping their first home contest of the season.

After holding the Owls hitless the first time through the lineup, FAU came up three straight hits to start the fourth inning off BC starter Kevin Boggan. Daniel Bomback led off with a double before Robbie Widlansky picked up his fourth home run, his third in the last three games, to give the Owls their first two runs.

By the fifth inning Boston College had a 6-2 run after scoring two runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings off FAU starter Brandon Cooney (2-2). Cooney finished the night after 4 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits and struck out two.

Kevin Boggan (1-0) earned the win after pitching five innings and allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight.

Five BC pitchers saw action in the game and the Owl offense posted runs off of Steven Cadoret and Ted Ratliff in the eighth. After Widlansky reached after being hit by a pitch, Ratliff entered to record two outs before allowing a walk and two doubles as three runs crossed the plate and bring the game within one run. The team could not overcome the deficit as Dan Houston entered to record his first save of the year by working the ninth inning.

FAU's Widlansky and Travis Ozga both finished with two hits and RBI to pace the Owls. Alex Silveresmith also added two hits. The three-game series will conclude on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game.
