Martin Hits Grand Slam in 12-3 Win

March 2, 2007

Final Stats

A six-run sixth inning, highlighted by a Justin Martin grand slam kick started the Florida Atlantic University offense and led to a 12-3 win over Villanova University Friday night at FAU Stadium. The Owls improve to 11-2 on the year while the Wildcats fall to 3-4.

Mickey Storey held Villanova scoreless in the first three innings and surrendered only one hit in that span and waited for the FAU offense to produce run. The team left the bases loaded in the second inning before pushing across the first run in the third William Block started the inning with a double, moved to second on a fly ball and scored on a Robbie Widlansky sacrifice fly. Block reached base four times in the game and scored on each play. He was a home run shy of the cycle and picked up one RBI.

The leadoff batter reached again in the fourth as Martin picked up a double. On the night, FAU leadoff hitters reached base five times. But the six runs in the sixth inning all came with two outs. The inning featured three walks, Martin's grand slam and three singles off three Villanova pitchers.

Five Wildcat pitchers saw action in the contest. Nate Hall entered in relief of starter Mike Loree and suffered the loss after he worked 1 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on one hit and two walks.

Alex Pepe (1-0) earned the win in relief for FAU. He worked 1 2/3 innings and did not allow a hit while striking out two. Justin Phillabaum threw the final two innings and did not allow a hit as he struck out four, including the side in the ninth.

Daniel Cook, Daniel Bomback and Block all finished the night with three hits as FAU compiled 15 as a team.

FAU will face Boston College in two games this weekend. Saturday night Brandon Cooney is expected to get the start in the 7 p.m. game with Mike Obradovich scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
