Mann Strikes Out Seven in 6-4 Win

Feb. 25, 2005

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University pulled out a 6-4 win over Purdue University on Friday night at FAU Stadium. Will Mann picked up his first win of the season with a season-high seven strikeouts.

Mann (1-1) faced one batter over the minimum through the first five innings before he ran into trouble in the sixth. The right hander allowed a lead off single to Neal Gorka and saw Mike Marx reach on an error. After recording the force out at third Mann loaded the bases with a bunt single. Andy Dahl then picked up four RBI with a grand slam home run over the left field fence to plate the Boilermakers (0-1) only runs of the contest.

FAU (5-2) posted two unearned runs in the third inning with two outs after catcher Alex Silversmith started the inning with his second double of the season. Scott Byrnes then struck out Mike McBryde (North Palm Beach, FL) but saw the speedy outfielder reach first on a passed ball to put runners on the corners. Tim Mascia (Wellington, FL) came through with an RBI on a ground ball to first base to score the first run. Designated hitter Brian Lipman (Moopark, CA) then singled through the left side to give the senior his first of three RBI on the night.

After Derek Hutton singled home the first run in the sixth inning, Lipman came through with the go-ahead RBI as Florida Atlantic scored three runs off of Jay Buente (0-1) to take the 5-4 lead.

Robbie Widlansky sealed the victory with his first home run of the season in the seventh inning for the 6-4 win.

Brandon Kloess, Mark Culp, Allen Knight and Mickey Storey all saw action out of the bullpen for FAU and did not allow a run. Storey picked up his first save of the year after pitching the ninth inning.

The teams will next meet on Saturday at 1 pm. Left-handed pitcher Brent Coudron will face FAU's Mike Crotta on the mound. Crotta is coming off of his best collegiate performance last week after he struck out 10 against no. 23 TCU.
