Baseball Off to Best Start in School History

Feb. 21, 2004

Final Stats

With a 29-1 win over George Washington University, no. 16 Florida Atlantic University is off to its best start in school history with an 9-0 start. Jeff Fiorentino recorded a career-high six RBI and designated hitter Jarrod Lauth tied a school record with five runs scored in the second-game of the three-game series against the Colonials.

FAU scored seven runs in the second and fifth innings and eight runs in the eighth inning as the teams scored the most runs since 2002 when Florida Atlantic scored 31 against Hartford.

Matt O'Brien (Royal Palm Beach, FL) picked up his third win of the season after he threw five innings, struck out one and allowed one run on four hits. Jason Costello, Brandon Kloess, Mark Culp and Mike McBryde all worked one inning out of the pen for FAU and only allowed one hit as GW was held to one run on five hits.

Mark Shupin scored the only run for the Colonials (0-2) in the third inning after he led off with a double and eventually scored on a ground out by Tom Shanley.

Josh Wilkie (0-1) got the start for GW but was replaced in the second inning after he allowed seven runs on five hits.

Fiorentino (Hollywood, FL) hit the only home run of the contest in the fifth inning and posted three of his six RBI as the ball carried to right field. Derek Hutton (Palm Beach Gardens) and Anthony Albano (Chicago, IL) both finished the night with 4-for-6 outings.

The two teams will close out the series on Sunday at 1 pm before Minnesota, Notre Dame and Winthrop visit FAU Stadium on February 27-29.
