Six Errors Costly as Baseball Defeats Siena

Feb. 21, 2003

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University (7-4) picked up its seventh win of the season as it defeated Siena College 5-2 in the first game of a three-game series. Strong pitching seemed to be the name of the game early as Siena's pitcher Jeremy Cabot (0-2) struck out the first three FAU hitters and Chris Pillsbury only allowed two on base in the first six innings.

Pillsbury (3-1) worked quickly and struck out five in seven innings of work and only allowed four hits. Those four hits were the only runners allowed on base as Pillsbury did not walk a batter.

The FAU offense gave Pillsbury a cushion in the third inning as it scored three runs with four singles off of Cabot. Rob Horst (Gering, NE) added to his team leading 11 RBIs when he singled to left field to score Matt Ryan and Jeff Fiorentino.

The Saints (0-4) countered back in the seventh and eighth to record a run in each inning. The first Siena run crossed the plate after a Matt Bueller check swing pushed the ball down the left side. Pillsbury hustled to the ball but made an errant throw to first base which allowed Shawn Hampton to score from second.

FAU reliever Allen Knight (Boca Raton, FL) received the only earned run for the home team as he walked the only two hitters that he faced in the eighth before James Callahan came out of the pen to finish the eighth.

Chris Saxton (Lake Worth, FL) earned his third save of the season as he pitched the final inning and struck out one.

The team will play an unscheduled doubleheader on Saturday due to expected bad weather on Sunday. The doubleheader will begin at noon and will feature right-handed pitchers Danny Core and Ryan Bitter in game one. Left-handed pitcher Travis NeSmith will make his second start of the season facing Josh Copskey in game two.
