Feb. 11, 2001

Box Score

BOCA RATON -

Florida Atlantic University's baseball team defeated Boston College 9-5, Sunday afternoon to build a three-game streak heading into next weekend's three-game series against in-state rival, Florida International University.

FAU was held hitless through four innings, before shortstop Bobby Spano had a Texas Leaguer double to lead-off the bottom of the ninth. Boston College scored the game's first run in the first and saw Paul Knapic, who took the loss and fell to 0-1 after 4 2/3 innings of work, allow FAU's tying run in the third score via walks..

Spano's hit woke up FAU's bats. Following his double, Gabe Somarriba singled to right placing runners on second and third. Spano scored on a balk. The team then added three more runs on waks, passed balls and two more hits. Jason Sullivan singled in FAU's sixth run while Robbie Orton drove in the first run of the seventh and Spano, who was 2-for-3 on the day drove in the second.

FAU would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Regan Samaniego, who led-off the inning with a single, scored on L.J. Biernbaum's single. Biernbaum was the only other FAU player to have two hits. On the day, he was 2-for-5 with two RBIs continuing his weekend hitting efforts which saw him go 5-for-12 with six RBIs, two doubles and a homer.

Chris Pillsbury started the game for FAU, but did not record a decision after pitching 4 1/3 innings. Pillsbury struck out five, walked four and allowed one run. Greg Eubanks made his third appearance of the season and picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless work. Nelson Lopez, James Callahan and Tim McNab each pitched an inning. McNab allowed the last four runs, three were earned.

FAU will next play a three-game series at Florida International University, beginning 7 pm, Friday.
