Baseball Improves to 4-3

Feb. 9, 2001

Box Score

BOCA RATON, FL -

Three runs in the bottom of the first is the only runs Florida Atlantic University would need, but the team added four insurance runs to take a 7-2 victory against Boston College and improve to 4-3 on the season.

Dean Devine hit a liner just over the right field fence and under the score board driving in Gabe Somarriba, who reached after being hit for a career leading 34 times and sixth time of the season, and Regan Samaniego, who hit a one-out single up the middle.

FAU manufactured its fourth run of the game in the bottom of the second. Rusty Brown drew a lead-off walk. He moved to second via a sacrifice bunt by catcher Rob Orton and to third on a wild pitch. Brown scored on Bobby Spano's sac bunt.

BC scored in the top of the third with a walk, two hits and an error.

In the bottom of the fourth Orton hit a two out single and later scored on Spano's homer to left center.

Offensivley, FAU was led by Dean Devine, who was 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and four RBIs. Spano was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.

Petersen Benjamin, who earned his third start of the season, pitched seven innings to improve to 2-0 on the year. He recorded five strikeouts, allowed two walks, his run was unearned. Benjamin was relieved by Matt O'Brien, who pitched the first two outs of the eighth, and allowed BC's second run. James Callahan finished the inning, but saw Aaron Diehl retire the final two outs of the game.

BC started Matt Elfeldt. Elfeldt took the loss after five innings of work. He retired three on strikeouts and walked two. Erik Olson completed the game earning two strikeouts and allowing two walks.

FAU will next play host to Oklahoma State, 7 pm, Saturday.
