Baseball falls to UM in the Third Game of the Series

Jan. 27, 2001

Box Score

CORAL GABLES, FL - The rubber-match game between Florida Atlantic University and the University of Miami proved just as exciting with UM taking the game 4-2.

Bobby Spano had the team's first hit in the third, Rusty Brown earned the second, but Regan Samaniego put FAU's only two runs on the board placing the first pitch offered on the third floor of the University of Miami's parking garage, beyond the right field fence.

UM, which scored in the first on FAU miscues and in the third on a two-run homer by Kevin Howard, responded to Samaniego's homer with a manufactured run to take a 4-2 advantage.

Danny Core earned the start for FAU and took the loss. Core pitched a complete game, gave up five hits, four runs, four walks and earned five strikeouts.

Tom Farmer started the game for UM. After six innings of work, the righthander gave up three hits, two runs both earned, walked three and retired six by strikeouts. He was relieved in the seventh by Danny Touchet, who recorded two outs and faced five batters. Alex Prendes faced the final hitter of the seventh to get out of a bases loaded jam. Prendes was lifted with a runner on and two outs in the eighth. Luke DeBold retired the final batter.

FAU, which matched UM by leaving six runners on base, threatened again in the top of the ninth with a two-out single by Mike Valdes.

Next up for FAU is a Daytona Beach weekend series verus 2000 NCAA Regional participant Bethune Cookman.
