With experience at all levels of baseball, Norberto Lopez began his newest journey in the fall of 2006 when he was named an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic University. Throughout his career, Lopez has been a mainstay in South Florida and has worked with high school, college and youth national teams.
"Norberto is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and motivating teacher of the game," said head coach Kevin Cooney. "He has worked our camps the last few years and has made a favorable impression on every player with whom he has worked. I'm excited to see his influences on Florida Atlantic baseball.
In his last coaching job, he helped Broward Community College to a third place finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series. As the hitting and catching coach he saw the team hit .301, set the home run record at the state tournament and win the Florida Community College Activities Association state title.
After gaining recognition for the team's outstanding performance he was named the hitting and catching coach for the USA Baseball Youth National Team. Lopez helped guide the team to a gold medal at the COPABE `AA' Youth Pan Am Championships in Venezuela. The offense finished the tournament with a .390 offensive clip.
His first coaching experience came as the head coach of an elite summer high school team in 2003-05. The X-Team earned a third place finish at the National Championship in 2004.
Lopez then moved on to American Heritage High School for one season before heading to BCC.
He got his start as a player at Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Hialeah, Florida before heading to Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University. Lopez earned his bachelor's degree from NSU in Business Administration and his master's in exceptional student education.
After being drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim he spent three years in the system. He advanced to AAA and made an appearance in major league camp.
Lopez is resides in Davie, FL with his wife Cheryl.
